Everyday Object In A New Way

Everyday Object In A New Way
By Aundrea Strickland
This project was to explore 7 creative strategies using an everyday object. The strategies are combination, juxtaposition, isolation, metaphor, change of context, shape similarity, and material change. You will find I chose a straw as my everyday object.
The flamingo and the straw have been combined to create something that is strange, but the image still makes sense.
I chose a stark transition to amplify the contrast of the two images. It makes a statement of a no in between of a clean healthy ocean or an artificial plastic filled one.
The isolation is most obvious in the glasses themselves, but it leaves the question open to interpretation of whether the person chose the poison and put the straw in it, or if it is poison due to the straw.
I feel this composition is also open to interpretation. There is an appearance of a message in the image, but people saw it a bit different. What message do you get out of it?
I feel this piece works well for the change of environment. The turtle is very artificial and that is contrasted against the natural water. That straws embedded in the turtle imply that is what creates the unnatural aspect.
I really like this composition. I find it visually appealing. It takes a moment to realize the shape for the light post is in fact a metal straw. There is a definite shape similarity between the two objects. The lines of the light lead you to the straw though so that you don't miss the change.
Yes I did in fact use the same straw in this photo. I felt the metallic nature fit the two. I feel the metal material and similar shape blended these two objects well.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing the world a bit differently today.
As a side note not related to the project, I do not have any particular hatred of straws, but I prefer reusable ones. Living on the coast has allowed me to see first hand what plastic is doing to our oceans and wildlife. Some say it is a myth, but I have seen it with my own eyes. God gave us this beautiful earth, let's try to keep it a bit cleaner.
